Satire ~ Instrument of Change

satireMy exposé on satire continues this week. I’ve posted things on the topic that are both interesting and funny. Do scroll down to past posts and read the first installments.

There are many facets to Satire. Today I’m examining satire as a social statement and instrument of change.

When I think of this sort of satire, my mind immediately goes to Garry Trudeau. He’s famous for charting and recording American folly  through a comic strip called Doonesbury, and hes been at it since 1970.

In 1975, Garry Trudeau was the first comic strip artist ever to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize gbfor editorial cartooning. He was also a three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist. And that’s not all. He’s a huge advocate for service members who have served, or are currently serving, in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with their spouses, and caregivers. In recognition of his work regarding wounded soldiers, he was presented with the Commander’s Award for Public Service by the Department of Army, the Commander’s Award from Disabled American Veterans, the President’s Award for Excellence in the Arts from Vietnam Veterans of America, the Distinguished Public Service Award from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and a special citation from the Vet Centers.

All this from an insightful satirical comic strip. Wow.

Learn more about this fascinating man and everything he’s up to these days.
